Garrett's Death Site Saved

Between Las Cruces and the San Augustin Pass, off U.S. Route 70, a historical marker commemorates the site of Pat Garrett’s death. The actual spot where the sheriff died, though, was marked by Pat’s eldest son, Jarvis, with a cement monument.
The death site was threatened by housing development plans. But the organization Friends of Pat Garrett formed in 2007 to save the site, and the members successfully convinced Las Cruces city leaders and the developer to protect Jarvis’ marker and set it aside as a memorial. In Las Cruces, you can visit the grave of Pat Garrett and many of his descendants in the Masonic Cemetery. Six feet below lies the coffin that held the body of the tall sheriff. He was so tall, at 6'4", that the coffin had to be specially made and sent in to Las Cruces for the burial.
