This is the sixth and last book in the “Mountain Man” series featuring a white man named Sam and his half-breed pal Hannibal who trap beaver in the Rocky Mountains. Sam and Hannibal realize the fur trade is dwindling and decide to lead their Crow families and friends to California. They buy a herd of Appaloosas, then begin the long and difficult trek west. Sam and Hannibal must deal with the harsh elements, plus stolen horses, runaway teenagers and a diabolical slave trader named Kanaka Boy. The story features interesting and believable characters crafted by an author who brings the 1840s Rocky Mountain wilderness to life.

Win Blevins does a nice story-telling of the early 19 century which he characteristically brings along in the six book series. Each book brought me closer to the mountains, the trappers, the indians, the landscape and the adventures these 1st Americans went through. His in depth knowledge of history and the people he writes about make reading, "a turn page event". I would strongly recommend. Win Blevins can write some books!
