Photographer Jesse H. Bratley befriended Sioux Chief Red Cloud and took this photo of him on the Rosebud Reservation in Oklahoma in 1898. The 77 year old holds a peace pipe. On an episode of History Detectives, Wes Cowan tracked down the authenticity of a peace pipe allegedly given to the chief’s Indian agent at Red Cloud Agency (inset).
