About Us
This novel, set in 1870s Texas, begins in the small town of Indianola on Matagorda Bay in the Gulf of Mexico, which was destroyed in that time period by hurricanes. Joshua Ryder is eight-years-old and living with his Mexican mother in a small adobe behind a saloon when she is brutally murdered. Almost nine years before, young, alone, and pregnant with him, Josh’s mother was taken in by three women who worked as prostitutes in the upstairs rooms of a saloon.
